The (female) ghost in the machine
James Damore got fired for telling Google that he thinks their policies to encourage more women to take up technology are misguided and likely, ineffective.
Regardless of the research and science behind his claims, the only data point that should matter is that the same exact discrimination against women in law and medicine was extremely prevalent even a century ago.
Likewise, American women were not allowed to vote until 1920 because they were considered too neurotic and emotional (both used colloquially.) Till date, the representation of women in politics lags their share of the population. Are we to surmise that women aren't interested in politics and take away their suffrage rights?
Give the diversity initiatives a chance, Damore. It has only been a decade or less in which the problem of gatekeepimg women out of tech has been identified.
