Moral hazard
The powers that be who governed at the height of the financial crisis were terribly, awfully wrong in not letting companies like AIG and FNMA/FMAC fall under their own weight.
While they kept the world economy moving and kept most people in their jobs, the economy forgot about cause and effect.
The result of that is the current political climate where everyone has realized that the government is toothless and its big stick is, at worst, a slap on the wrist.
Left without its clothes, most people are gamely forging ahead pretending they can't see the government's nakedness but it'll take just one person to have the courage to tell it like it is and the entire thing will collapse.
