Irritating UX

I recently subscribed to the Washington Post’s basic digital package. It’s the least I could do to support their journalism.

I have to say though that their UX is beyond vexing bordering on irritating. They, as is usual on the web, would like you to sign up for their email alerts and daily topical newsletters. No quibbles there. What bugs me so much is the placement of the sign up box.

I will be scrolling through an article and this sign up box will roll into view with not a hint that the article continues after the box. Many a time, an article will reach what looks like a possible conclusion followed by this box followed by even more content expanding on the article. I will try to find example of this behavior to explain my annoyance. Now that this has happened a few times in the last few days, I have started to scroll past every box on the page and not stopping until I reach the menu of links for further reading.

WaPo, fix this piece of crap UX. Don’t let Amazon’s terrible UX be your guidepost.
