Irritating UX - II

Another day, another example of UX that could be so simple to fix that not fixing it shows a deep chasm where user empathy should reside. Here's the previous example [sibling post on this blog]

In this case, the culprit is the otherwise extremely useful Overdrive app.

In general, Overdrive eschews aesthetics for effectiveness and I respect that. Yet, there is one area used by, I would guess 100% of their clientele, where their UX screams "Amateur"!

It is the Advanced Search function. And inside the Advanced Search function, it is the Availability drop down. By default, the "All Titles" option is selected.

What annoys me no end is what user searching for a media to read, listen to, or watch would want to see options which are currently not available?

I mean, I have NEVER, in 2+ years of using the Overdrive app, ever not changed the "Availability" setting to "Available Now". I have never wanted to see what books are coming soon, I have never wished to browse all books. All I ever wanted to do was borrow a book currently available for borrowing. That's it.

Why make me choose "Available now" 100% of the time when you could just as easily make that the default?
